Announcing the Five Themes Shaping Future Proof Citywide 2027

AI can give us answers in seconds. We can listen to some of the brightest minds in our industry on a podcast whenever we want. There’s no shortage of information, ideas, or expertise at our fingertips.

But there’s something different about coming together with people who bring their own experiences and perspectives. People who challenge how you think, build on ideas you’ve already encountered, and introduce possibilities you might not have considered on your own.

That’s what we’re building toward with Future Proof Citywide 2027.

We’re bringing together RIAs, broker-dealers, asset managers, banks, family offices, institutional investors, fintech companies, and professional services firms because the challenges and opportunities facing our industry are increasingly connected, and there’s a lot we can learn from one another.

We’ve identified five themes informed by conversations across our community, insights from Future Proof Festival, and developments throughout the industry. They reflect the questions we believe will matter most in the year ahead.

The AI Operating Model Reset

AI is changing more than how financial firms get work done. It’s changing how they’re built to operate. As AI agents take on work that once required multiple teams, systems, and handoffs, firms have an opportunity to rethink how responsibilities are divided, decisions are made, and people and technology work together. The challenge is no longer just identifying what to automate, but determining where humans add judgment, where agents take action, and how accountability is maintained. The firms that get this right will unlock new levels of productivity, scale, and growth without adding the same layers of cost and complexity.

The AI Stack

AI is becoming a new intelligence layer across wealth and investment management, connecting capabilities that have historically operated in separate systems, from advice and investments to custody, banking, planning, and distribution. As these boundaries shift, so does the balance of power across the industry. Who owns the data, context, agents, and workflows that connect it all, and who controls the client relationship and distribution? The answers will determine how firms compete, where new partnerships emerge, and who captures the greatest value as the industry evolves.

The Connected Client Experience

A financial answer is becoming nearly free. Knowing what to do with it is not. AI is changing what clients expect from financial institutions, creating opportunities to connect investments, banking, lending, tax, and planning into a more complete picture of their financial lives. Firms can now anticipate needs, coordinate expertise, and deliver more personalized guidance without requiring clients to navigate disconnected systems and conversations. The opportunity isn’t to automate the relationship, but to make it more valuable, combining AI-driven intelligence with the human judgment and trust that clients depend on.

The Future of Investing

AI is changing both the investment landscape and how investment decisions are made. Its impact on economic growth, corporate profitability, and capital allocation is creating new opportunities and risks across public and private markets, while challenging traditional assumptions about valuations and long-term returns. At the same time, AI is transforming how investors conduct research, evaluate opportunities, manage risk, and construct portfolios. As access to information and sophisticated tools becomes more widespread, the advantage will increasingly come from how investors apply judgment, challenge assumptions, and turn intelligence into better investment decisions.

The AI Apprenticeship

AI is changing how financial professionals learn, develop expertise, and build careers. As technology takes on more of the foundational work that once developed technical skills, institutional knowledge, and professional judgment, firms face a new challenge: How do people gain experience when they’re no longer learning by doing everything themselves? At the same time, AI is creating new opportunities for personalized learning, mentorship, and faster skill development at every career stage. From new hires to senior executives, the industry must rethink how knowledge is developed, experience is earned, and human expertise continues to grow alongside increasingly capable machines.

The Conversations That Move Us Forward

These themes will carry throughout the Future Proof Citywide 2027 experience, from the discussions onstage to the conversations happening between sessions. The value comes from hearing how others are approaching similar challenges, considering perspectives we might not otherwise encounter, and taking those ideas back to our own organizations.

We won’t have all the answers, and that’s part of the point. By challenging our thinking, learning from one another, and staying open to new possibilities, we can better prepare ourselves, our firms, and our industry for what’s ahead.
